In the beginning of June I completed my 105th group at OCM BOCES that Spring Institute held here in Syracuse, NY.
During the start of June I did a couple training for the Center of Responsive Schools, developers of the RC approach for teaching. My first session in June was a contractual event in Windsor, CA. This area is in the heart of wine region.
The second was Center for Responsive Schools Advertised Institute in Kennett Square, PA. During an advertised institute, I work with other RC trainers from all over the country and there are multiple session. This town is known as the mushroom capital of the world!
The first OCM BOCES event was during the week of July 5-8 in Vestal Central School. This district has been working over the last 2-3 years to get a training in district. After much work, Vestal became my 108th group to be trained in the Resposive Classroom Course. Vestal has already secured a week for training #2 in district for Summer 2017! Congrats to the newest RCC Graduates from Vestal!
During the week of July 19th the St. Lawrence/Lewis BOCES sponsored a Responsive Classroom Course to their component districts. Teachers from Gouverneur, Harrisville, and Morristown Schools in upstate NY were all present for this training.
In early August the Auburn City School District started their second summer of training organized by Kelly Garback. The goal last year was to get all the PRE-K teachers trained and this summer was to move up the grade levels as the district adds more and more teachers trained in the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching.
We offered 2 sessions of the Responsive Classroom Advanced Course down in Cortland. We first of all want to thank the Cortland School District for hosting us at their Kauffman Center.
The first 2-day session of the Advanced course was: Engaging Academics. Teachers from Auburn, OCM, Cortland, B’Ville, Chittenango, Deruyter and Solvay were part of this dynamic group.
The second 2-day session of the Advanced RC Course was: Effective Management. Teachers from Auburn, Chittenango, B’Ville and Solvay rounded off this fun group!
I finished off the summer with my 111th Responsive Classroom Course group hosted at the Kauffman Center in Cortland. This pulled teachers from Cortland, Westhill, B’ville, North Syracuse, FM, Tully and ESM!
The 2016-2017 School year is planned and ready to go for upcoming regional trainings that are included in service for the 23 OCM BOCES component districts.
Learn communication strategies that highly effective teachers use to support students’ high-level thinking, active participation, and collaboration. This kit includes materials for leading 30-minute professional development sessions on four topics:
Each session is built around a 10-minute video segment featuring master teachers using positive language with students at a variety of grade levels. The Center for Responsive Schools has a couple exciting events planned for this fall. Each year they hold the “Responsive Leadership” conference which I have attended over the year and so have local districts such as ESM and Cortland. This year, a brand new event has also been scheduled, the “Responsive Teachers” conference. Both will be held in Washington DC and not too far away from CNY!

“As middle schoolers begin the transition into young adulthood, they have a strong developmental need for learning that’s both active (hands-on, experiential) and interactive (social, collaborative). When we meet that need, students are more likely to behave in positive ways and engage more deeply with academics. But how can we build such dynamic learning into the short periods and packed curriculum typical in most middle schools? Motivators—interactive learning structures—are one excellent way…” READ More...Click here
The OCM BOCES Responsive Classroom Blackboard site has been taken down, but a new more ACTIVE and INTERACTIVE group has been added to Facebook!!! It is my hope the use of the “Closed” OCM-RC Facebook group, will allow former participants a virtual community where ideas can be shared and interactions with each other can continue. To request access to the group please search OCM-RC
