Connections: How we make them and how we stay connected

Jose Luis Vilson shares his story of connecting with students and what happens when that connection breaks down. His insight is valuable as he explores what it means to be an integral part of student’s learning.

Amy Cuddy, Social Psychologist, looks at nonverbal communication skills and how they influence ourselves and those around us. This is a great TED Talk that provides information on how we can encourage others to power through challenges in life. Wouldn’t it be great to provide this information to our students as they navigate through life?

Presence: Bringing your Boldest Self to your Biggest Challenges, Little, Brown and Company, New York, NY: 2015, Amy Cuddy, is the book that supports the TED talk and expands on her research.
“Expanding your body causes you to think about yourself in a positive light and to trust in that self-concept. It also clears your head, making space for creativity, cognitive persistence, and abstract thinking.” (pg. 220) This information not only transforms our own way of communicating but also can be extremely beneficial to students who are preparing for many challenges: internal and external challenges. I highly recommend this book for all of us as we navigate through life and work on seizing the moments and making them powerful.

In Social networking sites and digital identity: The utility of provider-adolescent communication by Anjali Chandra, M.S.Ed., (the Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter, March 2016), the importance of dialogue with adolescents about social networking sites (SNS) usage is a great way to connect with their world. Many times the adult may find out what’s working or what’s a challenge in SNS. Chandra gives some helpful conversation starters that can be considered when dialoguing with students:

  • Do you have any pictures of friends you want to show me? Did anything cool happen recently that you want to show me?
  • Which site or app is your favorite to share, post, or connect with your friends on?
  • Do you have a profile? Which part of your profile do you like the most or describes you the best? Do you like to change your profile? How have you changed it?
  • Are there certain thoughts or ideas you like to share online?
  • Are there times you feel like it’s easier to talk to your friends online than in person?
  • Do you like forming connections online? Why?
  • Do you ever feel unsafe online?
  • Have you ever had an argument about something you posted or something someone said about your profile?

Youth trained in primary drug prevention on a peer level

Teen Institute is a program that provides training for students in leadership skills around drug and alcohol prevention. As we make connections with students, make sure that we are giving them opportunities to voice their views and make a difference. Many schools have teams of teenagers who attend the fall weekend long training. Check out this site to learn more about this opportunity.
