Holocaust Resistance in a Contemporary Context Using the Inquiry Model

Participants will learn about a model cross-curricular inquiry project on Holocaust Resistance and Resistance to Current Human Rights Violations, the standards addressed, the resources used, and strategies for broader school involvement.

Leslie Cartier is a school librarian at Baker High School in the Baldwinsville Central School District. In 2016, Leslie co-founded the GEMS (Girls Engaged in Math & Science) Summer Camp, a STEM program held in a MakerSpace environment, at Baldwinsville Schools. She also founded the Baker Genius Bar in the 2015-2016 school year, which was featured on Syracuse News Channel 5’s Terrific Tuesday’s, to highlight what schools are doing “right”.

She served as co-president of the Central New York School Librarians from 2011-2014, and as co-chair for the NYLA Section of School Librarians Spring 2014 Conference. She is the author of “The Flexible Learning Lab” in AASL’s Knowledge Quest in 2014, and authored, “Digital Storytelling with Wordless Books,” a chapter in Richard Byrne’s free 2012 ebook, “Best Digital Storytelling Examples and Resources.” Her recent presentations include “Engaging Girls in STEM: A summer outreach library program” at the 2016 Greater CNY SLS Fall Conference, and “App-ealing Instructional Practices” at the NYLA 2013 SSL Conference (during which she demonstrated apps successfully used in instruction). Ericka Garcia

Ericka is a high school Social Studies teacher at Baker High School in the Baldwinsville Central School District and is in her 22nd year. Ericka teaches AP World History, Global History 10, and Sociology.

In 2010, she was awarded Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Central New York Council for the Social Studies of which she is a member and served on their Executive Committee for 5 years. During her tenure on the Central New York Council for the Social Studies, she served as Vice President of Programing for two years.

Ericka has also worked at the New York State Education Department since 2003 as an item writer for the Global History and Geography Regents Exams.

She is an extensive traveler, spent four years living in Europe, and is fluent in Italian.
