Using Wordless Picture Books to Teach ELLs to Write

Wordless books can be an exciting way to introduce new writers to storytelling. This session will focus on the use of wordless picture books to introduce English language learners to writing in English. The development of vocabulary and writing at the word, sentence, and discourse level will be examined. Tips and strategies to use in the classroom with ELLs and all students will be provided.

Mikian is originally from upstate New York, but has spent the majority of her 20 years teaching across the country and around the world. She began her career as a Teach For America corps member teaching second grade in the impoverished Mississippi Delta region. After completing her service, she traveled abroad to teach in Damascus, Syria, Seoul, South Korea and Corinth, Greece. Domestically she has taught almost every grade level from Pre-K through Adult ED with positions in Norfolk, Virginia, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Conklin and Syracuse, New York, and Fairfax County, Virginia. She has been involved in teaching English as a Second Language for more than 10 years with students of all ages and from all over the world.

Mikian has an AS in Liberal Arts from Mohawk Valley, a BA in Social Studies from Utica College and an MSed in Elementary Education from SUNY Oneonta.
